The girl behind Runaway Ro

Who am I and what will my side of the blog be about?

I am a 24-year-and-11-month-old girl who is holding on to her last shred of her “early 20s”. As you likely read in the About Us part of the blog’s home page, you might already know I am a newly finished class of Covid-19 final year student of Bioscience and Biopharmaceuticals. I like to think of myself as an easy-going free spirit that will be up for anything in order to gain memories and a laugh! I love to laugh, and believe it is the most important thing to get you through a bad day! I have many passions and ambitions about life, family and political issues and while I hate confrontation an unhealthy amount, I will have no trouble speaking up for something I believe in and for values I trust in. Basically, I am an out and out Cancer, if you know you know, take with that what you will! So, since that’s me in a nutshell, this blog is just going to be fun and easy going way for me to document my main passion in life, that is travelling. Hopefully it can help someone along the way with my non-professional advice about how I managed to safely and successfully travel so far and updates on future plans.

I started this blog with my friend to feed my need for travel and adventure since none can be had this year. I caught the travel bug after my first big once in a lifetime ski trip with my school and since then I’ve craved ticking off my bucket list and gathering as much life experiences as I can! From my “on the piss” friend’s holidays in Spain and Portugal; something everyone has to go through in life as an initiation into adulthood, to the first month long backpacking trip around the breath-taking Thailand and flawless Vietnam! However, the real bucket list ticking trip was with my family in Iceland where we had the most hilarious fun and unforgettable few days together. We got to see the northern lights, the geysers, the fault lines and the natural blue lagoon pool! The mars-like planet that is Iceland is definitely a memorable one! My longest trip was my broke and crazy J1 Summer in New York City which has many unbelievably funny stories that I probably shouldn’t document too much on this (hi mam and dad x).

I became determined to go somewhere new and crazy every summer after that New York Summer as I wanted to make the most of my youth and Summers off while still in college which lead me to even more amazing and life changing trips to Cuba, Costa Rica and South Africa all of which taught me so much about life, culture, nature and myself! South Africa is where I got my Explore Adventure Understand tattoo expressed in glyphic triangles on my arm. We decided to make it the name of this blog, as I believed they are all the best adjectives needed to truly explain and immerse yourself into travel! Adventure because you should always seek it fearlessly across continents and borders. Explore because you should force yourself out of your comfort zones and explore all experiences possible; scary ones and funny ones, make the friends, try the foods and take the risks. Lastly, Understand which I believe is the most important aspect of travelling; to truly enjoy and take in a country or city you must teach yourself the cultures, the language and dive straight into the new and different ideas of living that exist around the world, talk to the locals, ask the questions and allow yourself to witness all, even some that may not be pleasing such as poverty, ruins and communism in countries.

To wrap it all up, my side of the blog will be based on all these trips mentioned above and more, full of how I planned them, day to day routes, must see’s, tips and tricks for managing the different countries and many more. I will be discussing my advice on packing, although my advice should not be taken too seriously as I am not the most minimalistic packer! I hugely enjoy planning these trips almost as much as going and will talk a lot about my process in organising them to make sure I get to see every aspect of a country and not just the luxurious beaches but also the mainland’s, the farms, the jungles and the cities! I will be coinciding my blog with my insta page where you can find photos and memories gathered from these trips all of which are taken with bad phone cameras and bad angles so no judgement. I’ve invested in a camera and will learn how to take the perfect photos also! I hope you all enjoy and if not, I won’t fret as this is just a way for me to share my journeys to my friends and family and just re-awaken some of the great memories I’ve made so no hate pls.

Talk soon,

Runaway Ro
